Mrs. McNosh Match the Rhyme Game

Hey there, just a quick post to share my newest Match the Rhyme game. I am in love with this game. Not only is it fun but I just love how it looks, so bright and colorful.

This game has 2 levels. It has 1 game that uses all the words from the book, which can be a bit more difficult, as well as a game using 1 syllable rhyming words. This way you can choose which works best for your kids.

Here is a picture of one of the games all printed out. 

So much fun!!

Just wanted to post the true false comprehension games that I created for A Pocket Full of Kisses by Audrey Penn and Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathman.

We have had such fun reading the books and playing the games, I figured I should share them.

Plus or Minus 1 or 10 Game - A Tutoring Activity

Once again, I was looking for a way for my tutor kids to practice +- 1 and +-10 and to have fun while doing it. I came up with this fun game.

Students draw a card and then spin the spinner to determine if they are making their number plus 1, minus 1 or finding a number that is equal. The plus 10 minus 10 game is played exactly the same way.

Once the new number is figured out they find it on their side of the game board and mark the number. Play continues till the first person covers all their numbers, or, if time is up before numbers are covered, the person with the most covered is the winner. Included is also a recording sheet to make students accountable for their game.

My tutor kids loved it, and soon got the hang of what plus one minus one (or plus ten, minus10) meant in terms of the number that was drawn.

Comparative and Superlative 4 in a Row

Comparative and superlatives can sometimes be difficult and need lots of practice.  When do you use –est, when do you use –er? Those are the questions your students will ask when using comparatives and superlatives.

To help with this question I came up with this fun game to practice this.

My tutor students have had a fun time playing this game. After drawing a card they spin the spinner to see if they will be adding –er or –est to the end of the word. Once they have their new word they must find a sentence that fits the word.

Once they find their sentence they mark the board and record it on their sheet.

This is a fun way for your students to practice this, my tutor kids LOVE it!!

Building Better Sentences

One of my tutor students needed a bit of help with her sentences. She was great with her basic sentences but getting her to expand on those was a bit harder.  She would add a detail here or there, but it was hard for her to see where she could add more. 

To make this tedious task fun, I came up with this “Building Better Sentences” activity.

This activity allowed Allie to see the basic sentence and then add the adjectives where she thought they sounded best. To my surprise, instead of just adding one or two adjectives, she made it a challenge to try to use all of them. This in turn, gave me a great teaching opportunity. 

When she was done with the sentences we were able to talk about how the adjectives worked in the sentence she created, as well as deciding if they were really needed or if the sentence sounded better without certain words.

Overall, this turned out to be a great activity, and with continued playing, she is getting to the point of adding those adjectives automatically.

Prepositions

My tutor students were needing practice with prepositions - what they were and when to use them. I came up with this activity that is actually a 3 in 1 game/activity.

Game 1 - Pick a Preposition - where students pick a sentence card and determine what preposition is missing and then mark it off the game board.

Game 2 - Spin a Preposition - where students spin the spinner and then find a sentence card that fits the preposition spun (it is best to use only about 10 cards at a time for this, otherwise they are completely overwhelmed by all the sentences to read).

Sorting Activity - students use the preposition headers to sort the sentences.

My tutor students loved this and it really made them think about what word was missing and if that word made sense in the sentence.

Tutoring Activities

Since I don't have my own classroom (because of budget cuts...ugh, are things ever going to get better?) I do LOTS of tutoring. I am always looking for and creating activities and games and fun ways to teach and practice reading skills and strategies.

I use ALL my reading skill and strategy packets and picture books with my kids as well as the little review activities I created and posted below. Here are a few examples from some of the books I have reviewed.
